There are certain days that just feel like a dream from start to finish, and Jessica and Nick’s Hug Point elopement was one of them.

These two originally planned to elope in Colorado, but after moving to the West Coast, everything shifted. That kind of change can feel overwhelming, but they rolled with it, and together we ended up creating a brand new plan that brought their dream to life in a way they never expected.

They were open, joyful, and fully present. The kind of couple who doesn’t care about frills or trends, but just wants a beautiful place, their people close by, and a day that actually feels like them. And honestly, Hug Point was perfect for it.

Jessica & Nick’s Story Hug Point Elopement Story

After the move, Jessica and Nick wanted to find a location that gave them the same sense of adventure and awe they were originally drawn to in Colorado.

I gave them four options across the state. They chose Hug Point for its dramatic cliffs, built-in privacy, and intimate feel. It’s tucked just far enough from the more crowded parts of the coast, and when the tide is low, it opens up into a coastal scene that almost feels untouched.

On the day of their elopement, they kept saying: “This doesn’t feel real.”

They exchanged vows surrounded by loved ones, took portraits along the beach and in the caves, and then headed back to their Airbnb for dinner, where they changed into pajamas, and spent the night all cozied up, exactly how they wanted.

Why Choose Hug Point for Your Elopement in Oregon?

If you’re dreaming of an Oregon Coast elopement, Hug Point should absolutely be on your list. It’s about 10 minutes south of Cannon Beach, with sweeping views, textured rock formations, and caves you can walk through at low tide.

It’s romantic, rugged, and somehow still a little secret. That’s rare.

Planning Your Own Hug Point Elopement

If Hug Point is calling to you, here are a few key things to know about planning your day here:

Location + Scenery

Hug Point is located along the northern Oregon Coast, just south of Cannon Beach. It’s known for its dramatic cliffs, hidden caves, sea stacks, and seasonal waterfalls. It’s accessible without a long hike, but still feels private and tucked away, especially if you plan your ceremony for a weekday or early morning.

Permits

If you’re planning a simple elopement with minimal setup (no arches, no big guest list), you likely won’t need a special use permit. But it’s always best to check with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department or work with a photographer like me, who knows how to confirm and apply for any required permissions.

Parking + Accessibility

There’s a small parking lot at Hug Point State Recreation Site, which fills up fast in peak season. Try to plan for off-peak hours (early morning or sunset on a weekday) to avoid crowds. The beach is just a short walk from the lot, but you’ll want to check tide charts to make sure access is safe and open.

Tide Safety

One of the biggest factors when eloping at Hug Point is the tide. At high tide, some areas of the beach, like the caves and the waterfall, may be inaccessible. Always check tide charts ahead of time (I do this for every coastal elopement) and plan your ceremony around low tide for safety and the best experience.

Best Time to Elope

June through September offers the most stable weather. That said, Oregon’s coast can be moody in the best way with misty skies and dramatic clouds making for stunning photos. Just come prepared with layers and expect the occasional breeze off the ocean.

Nearby Lodging + Airbnb Tip

One of the best things about eloping in this area? You can stay nearby and have a cozy, laid-back celebration after. That’s exactly what Jessica and Nick did when after portraits, we all headed back to the Airbnb for dinner in their PJs. No fancy venue needed!

From the Couple:

“We hired Jason a year out from our wedding. When we suddenly had to switch locations to another state, he was completely flexible and even helped us choose a new location. He found a breathtaking scenic beach in Oregon for our ceremony.

Jason helped us each step of the way to find vendors, researching marriage and permit requirements, and helped streamline the entire process. He went above and beyond to make sure our wedding was a dream come true.

Not only are our photographs absolutely beautiful, he kept us on track on the day of our elopement. He helped a clueless bride and groom get through our wedding day.

His photographs captured the raw emotion and joy present that day. We didn’t want formal or pictures that felt posed, and he captured the beauty of the surrounding area. Jason is a truly gifted photographer and his pictures still make me cry.

If you are looking for an elopement, I absolutely recommend Jason. You’ll get a professional photographer, but you get so much more. He jumped in when things went sideways.

We really had the best wedding we could imagine and we truly believe it was because we hired Jason.”
