I’d like to start this by saying that you don’t need to be a local to the place to have an epic elopement.

Nick and Jessica originally planned to elope in Colorado, but after a big move to the West Coast, they set their sights on Oregon instead. Here’s the kicker, though, I had never been to Oregon before. But that didn’t stop us from planning a day that was so true to them. It was a day full of beauty, intention and adventure.

So if you’re wondering how to elope in a state you’ve never visited (or working with a photographer who’s not local), let this be your sign: it’s absolutely possible. And not just possible—it can be downright incredible.

You Don’t Need to Be a Local to Plan the Perfect Elopement

I get it, there’s a lot to think about when you’re planning a wedding or elopement out of state. Permits, weather, travel logistics, vendors… it can feel like a lot. But that’s exactly where my experience comes in.

I’ve planned and photographed elopements all over, from the iconic landscapes of Colorado to new-to-me locations like Oregon. And every time, the key has been the same: a strong plan, thoughtful research, and putting my couples first.

For Nick and Jessica, we reimagined their entire day from scratch. I helped them pivot locations, introduced them to local Oregon vendors, mapped out a travel-friendly timeline, and made sure every piece of their day felt grounded, easy, and aligned with what they cared about.

What Makes an Out of State Elopement Work?

It comes down to a few big things:

Experience in Elopement Logistics (Not Just Local Knowledge)

Sure, knowing a location helps. But knowing how to build an experience anywhere? That’s the real skillset.

I help couples figure out the important stuff:

  • What permits do we need?
  • What are the sunrise/sunset times like at this time of year?
  • Will the trail be muddy, snowy, or totally inaccessible?
  • How close are the getting-ready and ceremony spots?
  • How do we make time for both adventure and quiet moments?

Whether I’ve photographed in a location before or not, I’m doing in-depth research, scouting, and planning every single time.

Vendor Connections You Can Trust

Even if I don’t know a state inside and out, I know how to find the right people who do. For Nick and Jessica’s Oregon coast elopement, I tapped into my network, asked the right questions, and built a dream team for them—from florals to hair and makeup.

This means you’re not alone in finding amazing, reliable vendors, even if you’ve never set foot in the state before.

Creative Flexibility and Problem-Solving

I always say that elopements come with a different set of challenges, and that’s where I thrive. We’re dealing with weather, permits, travel logistics, maybe even snowstorms or wildfire detours. But no matter the obstacle, I’ve got backup plans (and backups to the backups). My job is to make sure your day runs smoothly, wherever you are and especially when we’re navigating unfamiliar terrain.

Nick & Jessica’s Out of State Elopement

The two of them had envisioned a Colorado elopement with mountain views, wide open spaces, and room to breathe. But when life brought them to the West Coast, they chose to embrace it and reimagine their day in Oregon instead.

So we got to work.

I researched locations that matched their vision, scoped out the best time of year, built a seamless timeline, and took care of every little planning detail. We found an incredible team of local vendors, scouted the perfect ceremony spot, and made sure the whole day reflected them.

The best part? You’d never know it was my first time photographing in Oregon. The photos turned out absolutely stunning, and more importantly—Nick and Jessica got to be fully present, stress-free, and totally in the moment.

That’s what it’s all about.

Thinking of Eloping Out of State? Here’s What to Keep in Mind

  1. Trust your photographer. A great elopement photographer isn’t just going to take your pictures. They’re your planner, location scout, logistics guide, and calming presence. Make sure you’re working with someone who knows how to adapt and lead, not just someone local.
  2. Embrace the unknown. There’s something magical about exploring new ground together. Whether it’s your first time in the state or your hundredth, your elopement should be full of discovery, connection, and intention.
  3. Let someone else handle the hard stuff. From permits to timing to vendor calls, I’ve got you! You don’t need to have it all figured out. That’s what I’m here for.
