When it comes to choosing the perfect spot to elope, Colorado has no shortage of breathtaking options. Whether you’re drawn to the towering peaks of the Rockies, the golden glow of aspen groves, or the surreal beauty of rolling sand dunes, there’s a place here that’s perfect for your love story. As a Colorado local and an experienced elopement photographer, these are my recommendations for some of the best Colorado elopement locations, complete with insider tips and details to help you find your dream spot. Let’s dive in!

How to Choose Your Colorado Elopement Location?

Before choosing your Colorado elopement location, consider a few things, such as when you would like to elope, the accessibility, and how the landscape fits your vision. For example, some locations are more accessible during summer and fall, while winter offers other options best for snow bunnies.

You should definitely consider whether you want the location to be close to a bigger city, how important amenities are, how much you’re willing to hike (especially important when bringing guests!), how close the location should be to your accommodations, and more. Some elopement locations only allow the couple and a handful of other people, while others are available for larger elopements of up to about 20-25 people.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone. As someone who’s helped countless couples plan their dream Colorado elopements, I’m here to guide you every step of the way. Together, we’ll find the perfect location that matches your vibe, whether you’re dreaming of an alpine meadow, a desert canyon, or a hidden forest grove.

Buena Vista

Nestled in the heart of the Arkansas River Valley, Buena Vista is the epitome of mountain charm. With the dramatic Collegiate Peaks towering in the background, this small town offers stunning views and an endless array of outdoor activities. Imagine saying your vows along the banks of the Arkansas River or at the base of Mount Princeton—the scenery here is as rugged as it is romantic.

Buena Vista is perfect for couples looking for a mix of adventure and intimacy. Nearby hot springs in one of the resorts can also be a relaxing way to wind down after your ceremony, and the area’s hiking trails offer countless spots for incredible portraits. Whether you want a quiet, secluded elopement or a day packed with activities, Buena Vista has something for everyone.

Tips: Be sure to check seasonal trail conditions if you’re planning to elope on a mountaintop or by a high-altitude lake. Late spring through early fall is ideal for accessibility.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

The Great Sand Dunes feel like another world, with sweeping dunes set against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. There’s something incredibly romantic about the contrast between the golden sand and the rugged peaks, making this location a favorite for adventurous couples.

You can exchange vows right on the dunes, with the dramatic landscape stretching as far as the eye can see. Sunrise and sunset are particularly stunning times to elope here, as the soft light casts long shadows across the dunes. Plus, the cooler temperatures during these times make for a more comfortable experience.

Tips: Be prepared for the unique challenges of this location, like shifting sands and strong winds. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, especially if you plan to hike deep into the dunes for added privacy.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is a place where the grandeur of the Rockies takes center stage. From the sweeping views of Trail Ridge Road to the tranquil beauty of alpine lakes and wildflower-filled meadows, this park is truly a haven for nature lovers. Whether you’re standing in the shadow of towering peaks or surrounded by the serene stillness of a forest, it’s easy to see why Rocky Mountain National Park is a top choice for elopements.

Couples looking to exchange vows in this iconic destination must choose from designated ceremony locations, including picturesque spots like Sprague Lake, Upper Beaver Meadows, and the scenic overlook at 3M Curve. After the ceremony, the park’s endless trails and stunning backdrops provide the perfect setting for intimate portraits. The Bear Lake area, in particular, offers some of the most accessible and breathtaking views, ideal for capturing the magic of your day.

Tips: To elope in Rocky Mountain National Park, you’ll need a Special Use Permit, and these permits tend to fill up fast. For more information visit here! Planning at least a year in advance is highly recommended, especially for summer and fall weddings when the park is at its busiest. Be mindful of weather conditions and pack layers, as mountain weather can change quickly, even in the warmer months.

Telluride

Nestled in a box canyon surrounded by the dramatic San Juan Mountains, Telluride is one of Colorado’s most picturesque towns. The historic charm of the town combined with the natural beauty of the surrounding peaks makes it an incredible spot for an elopement.

You can exchange vows with Bridal Veil Falls or Wilson Peak as your backdrop, or take a scenic gondola ride for a ceremony with panoramic views. The alpine lakes and wildflower meadows nearby are equally breathtaking, offering a variety of settings for your big day.

Tips: Summer and early fall are ideal for accessing high-elevation spots. Be sure to check trail conditions if you plan to hike to a remote location.

Colorado State Parks

Colorado is home to 42 incredible state parks, each offering its own unique charm and opportunities for elopements. Many of these parks have wedding facilities that can be reserved for simple ceremonies and picnic-style receptions, making them a great option for couples seeking an affordable and scenic venue. For those looking to elope outside of designated facilities, several parks offer Special Use Agreements, allowing you to tailor your day to the natural beauty around you.

Getting Your Colorado Elopement Permit

Before you can officially tie the knot at many of Colorado’s stunning locations, you’ll need to secure the appropriate permits. Most national parks, state parks, and other public lands require a Special Use Permit for elopements and ceremonies to ensure that the natural beauty of these spaces is preserved. The process for obtaining a permit typically involves filling out an application, paying a fee (which can range from $50 to $300, depending on the location), and adhering to specific rules and regulations set by the site.

For example, locations like Rocky Mountain National Park and Great Sand Dunes National Park have clear guidelines about ceremony locations, group size limits, and restricted areas to help protect the environment. It’s important to apply for your permit as early as possible since availability can be limited, especially during peak seasons. Having a permit not only ensures your day goes smoothly but also guarantees you’re respecting and preserving Colorado’s incredible landscapes for future generations.

If navigating the permit process feels overwhelming, I’m here to help! I can guide you through the steps and make sure all the details are covered, so you can focus on celebrating your love.
